What is Mirror Therapy?

Mirror therapy was developed by Vilayanur Ramachandran in 1996. It is a neuroplasticity-based treatment in which the reflection of the unaffected limb in a mirror creates the perception that the affected limb is moving normally.

Mechanism: visual feedback activates the premotor cortex, primary motor cortex and superior parietal lobule. By supporting cortical reorganisation, it improves the function of a hemiparetic arm and reduces phantom pain.

Indications include hemiparesis after stroke, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), phantom pain and sensory disturbance after peripheral nerve repair. It is usually performed for 30-60 minutes per day, 5 days per week, for 4-6 weeks.

Symptoms

Hand and arm paralysis after stroke
Complex regional pain syndrome
Phantom pain
Phantom sensations after amputation
Neuropathic pain
Coordination problems after hemiparesis

Risk Factors

Stroke
Amputation
CRPS
Peripheral nerve injuries
Traumatic brain injury
Postsurgical pain syndromes

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In chronic stroke rehabilitation
  • For phantom pain
  • In the management of CRPS
  • As an adjunct to other therapies
  • When a home programme is needed

Treatment Methods

01
Training in the mirror therapy box and protocol
02
Movement of the unaffected limb
03
Visual feedback through the mirror reflection
04
Sessions of 30-60 minutes per day
05
Gradual increase in movement complexity
06
Combination with conventional rehabilitation
07
Adaptation to a home programme
08
Tele-rehabilitation follow-up where appropriate
