What is Meralgia Paresthetica?

Meralgia paresthetica develops as a result of compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve as it passes under the inguinal ligament. It produces only sensory findings; muscle strength is unaffected. It is usually seen in middle-aged and older individuals.

Patients complain of burning, tingling, numbness, or hypersensitivity on the front-outer thigh. Symptoms become prominent with prolonged standing, walking, and the use of tight belts and clothing.

Diagnosis is clinical; imaging and electrophysiology are useful to rule out other causes. The mainstay of treatment is to remove the pressure; most cases improve with a conservative approach.

Symptoms

Burning and pain on the front-outer thigh
Numbness and tingling in this area
Hypersensitivity to touch
Symptoms increasing with standing and walking
Decrease with sitting and rest
Tight belts and trousers triggering symptoms
Isolated sensory loss on the front of the thigh

Risk Factors

Obesity and weight gain
Pregnancy
Use of tight trousers and belts
Heavy and tight tool belts
Diabetes
Long periods of standing or walking
Increased intra-abdominal pressure (ascites, large tumors)
