What is MBSR for Chronic Pain and Mood?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week structured group programme developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts in 1979.

Includes formal practices such as body scan, sitting meditation, mindful yoga and walking meditation. Each session lasts 2.5 hours and a one-day retreat is added at week 6.

There is solid scientific evidence in chronic low back pain, fibromyalgia, generalised anxiety disorder, major depression, hot flushes, hypertension and cancer-related fatigue.

Chronic pain (low back pain, fibromyalgia, neck pain)
Generalised anxiety and panic attacks
Mild-to-moderate depression
Insomnia and sleep quality decline
Stress-related symptoms (gastritis, IBS)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Psychiatric evaluation is needed for severe depression and suicidal ideation
  • Standard medical treatment must continue in active psychotic disorder
  • MBSR is supportive only; should not be a substitute for primary disease treatment
  • Choosing a certified MBSR instructor (CFM-trained) is important
