What is Mammography Screening Program?

Mammography screening is a low-dose X-ray examination performed at regular intervals for early detection of breast cancer in asymptomatic women. In Turkey, it is provided free of charge through KETEM centers every 2 years to women aged 40-69.

Mammography can detect non-palpable microcalcifications and early-stage tumors. Early-stage breast cancer has a 5-year survival rate above 90%.

In women with dense breast tissue, ultrasound or MRI may be recommended as additional examination.

Symptoms

Asymptomatic screening itself (primary purpose)
Palpable mass evaluation
Nipple discharge
Skin retraction
Axillary lymph node enlargement
Follow-up of previous masses

Risk Factors

Family history (BRCA1/2 mutation)
Being a woman aged 40 and over
Early menarche, late menopause
Long-term hormone therapy
Obesity and sedentary lifestyle
Previous breast biopsy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Women over 40 should have screening at KETEM
  • High-risk individuals may require earlier and more frequent monitoring
  • If screening result is abnormal, further evaluation (US, MRI, biopsy) is planned
  • Breast self-examination does not replace clinical evaluation but supports it

Treatment Methods

01
Proper calibration of mammography equipment
02
Optimal compression of breast tissue
03
Low-dose radiation protocols
04
Combined evaluation with additional examinations (US, MRI)
05
Follow-up according to BI-RADS classification
06
Biopsy guidance for suspicious lesions
