What is MR Angiography (MRA)?

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a technique that uses an MRI scanner to image arteries and veins. It does not involve ionizing radiation.

It can be performed with gadolinium contrast (CE-MRA) or without it (time-of-flight, phase-contrast). Non-contrast techniques may be preferred, especially in patients with kidney failure.

It is used to evaluate the cerebral vessels, carotid and vertebral arteries, thoracic and abdominal aorta, renal arteries and peripheral vessels. It is effective for detecting aneurysm, dissection, stenosis and malformations.

Symptoms

Suspected intracranial aneurysm or AVM
Carotid and vertebral artery disease
Follow-up of aortic aneurysm and dissection
Suspected renal artery stenosis
Peripheral arterial disease
Vasculitis evaluation

Risk Factors

MR-incompatible metallic implants (pacemaker, clips)
Claustrophobia
Gadolinium allergy
Kidney failure (nephrogenic systemic fibrosis)
Pregnancy (caution in early pregnancy)
Overweight patients (device size)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Metal implants, pacemakers and hearing aids must be reported
  • Mild sedation may be planned in case of claustrophobia
  • Kidney function should be evaluated beforehand
  • Instructions to remain still and breath-hold are important

Treatment Methods

01
MR safety form and consent
02
Removal of metal items
03
Gadolinium injection if necessary
04
Image acquisition with special sequences
05
3D reconstruction and reporting
06
Sharing of results with the clinician
