What is Maggot Therapy (Chronic Wound)?

Maggot therapy (maggot debridement therapy) is the application of green bottle fly (Lucilia sericata) larvae produced under sterile conditions in the laboratory to chronic and infected wounds to clean necrotic tissue and accelerate healing.

It is a biomedical method approved by the FDA and some health authorities. It is used for debridement of diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, and venous ulcers.

Within the framework of Ministry of Health T&CM regulations, it requires appropriate patient selection and sterile conditions. Unauthorized and uncontrolled larval applications are dangerous.
