What is Lymphedema Rehabilitation?

Lymphedema is chronic tissue swelling resulting from accumulation of lymph due to damaged or obstructed lymphatic vessels or nodes. It is classified as primary (congenital) or secondary (acquired).

Arm lymphedema after breast cancer surgery and radiotherapy and leg lymphedema after gynecologic cancer treatment are the most common secondary forms. Filarial lymphedema is a frequent primary cause in developing countries.

Combined decongestive therapy (CDT) is the gold standard: manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, therapeutic exercise, and skin care. Treatment can control swelling, but complete resolution is rare.

Symptoms

Progressive swelling in an arm or leg
Sensation of heaviness and fullness
Skin hardening and fibrosis in chronic disease
Recurrent infection (cellulitis)
Movement limitation and fatigue
Cosmetic concerns and shape changes

Risk Factors

Cancer surgery and radiotherapy (sentinel lymph node or axillary dissection)
Obesity
Infection and wounds
Immobility
Tight clothing
Excessive heat exposure
