What is Lymphedema Compression Therapy?

Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive swelling that develops as a result of accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitial space due to structural or functional disorders of the lymphatic system.

Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard for the treatment of lymphedema. It consists of two phases: an intensive phase (reduction) and a maintenance phase (preservation). Components include skin care, manual lymphatic drainage, multilayer bandaging, exercise, and compression garments.

Compression therapy is one of the most critical components of CDT. Multilayer bandages are used in the intensive phase, and certified compression garments (stockings/sleeves) in the maintenance phase. Long-term effectiveness depends on patient adherence.
