What is Lumbar Stabilization?

Lumbar stabilization is a specific exercise approach targeting the transversus abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor and diaphragm muscles, which play a critical role in lumbar spine control. These muscles contract in a 'feedforward' manner before activation of the larger superficial muscles to protect the back from movement.

In patients with chronic low back pain, multifidus atrophy and delayed activation have been demonstrated. Stabilization exercises reverse this atrophy and normalize motor control.

Pilates-based exercises, McKenzie exercises and the motor control approach are among the practical forms of lumbar stabilization.

Symptoms

Chronic or recurrent low back pain
Sensation of the back giving way
Morning stiffness and tightness
Difficulty bending forward and standing up
Inability to stay in the same position for long
Limitation in daily activities

Risk Factors

Multifidus muscle atrophy
Weakened core in the postpartum period
Sedentary lifestyle
Previous lumbar surgery
Pregnancy
Being overweight

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When chronic low back pain progresses with recurrent flares
  • To obtain an individualized exercise prescription
  • For postpartum core weakness
  • To plan post-operative rehabilitation
  • When a pain-free exercise protocol needs to be created

Treatment Methods

01
