What is Lumbar MRI?

Lumbar MRI is a high-resolution MRI examination that visualizes the vertebrae, discs, spinal canal and nerve roots in the lumbar region in slices. It does not contain radiation.

It is requested in cases of chronic low back pain, sciatica, walking difficulty, disturbance of urination–defecation and muscle weakness. It is the gold standard for diagnosing pathologies such as disc herniation, stenosis, tumor and infection.

The procedure takes 30–45 minutes; the presence of metal implants, pacemaker and claustrophobia must be evaluated.

Symptoms

Chronic or sudden-onset low back pain
Sciatica radiating to the leg
Muscle weakness and walking disorder
Numbness and tingling
Disturbance of urination and defecation (urgent evaluation)
Postoperative follow-up
Suspicion of infection or tumor

Risk Factors

Heavy lifting and poor posture
Sedentary lifestyle
Obesity
Osteoporosis
Familial spinal diseases
History of trauma

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Cauda equina syndrome (saddle anesthesia, urinary–fecal incontinence) is an emergency
  • MRI may be ordered for pain of standing intolerance
  • If muscle weakness is progressing, early evaluation is essential
  • Sudden severe low back pain associated with trauma is urgent
