What is Limbic Encephalitis?

Limbic encephalitis is a rare brain inflammation affecting memory- and emotion-related regions of the brain (hippocampus, amygdala, cingulate cortex). It can be autoimmune or paraneoplastic (cancer-associated).

Acute or subacute onset of short-term memory loss, behavioral changes, psychiatric symptoms, and seizures is typical. Antibodies (such as anti-Hu, anti-Ma2, LGI1, GABA-B) may be directed against specific antigens.

Significant improvement is achieved in some patients with early diagnosis and appropriate immunomodulatory therapy. The underlying cancer should be sought in paraneoplastic forms.

Symptoms

Short-term memory loss
Personality and behavioral changes
Psychiatric symptoms (agitation, hallucination)
Seizures
Sleep disorders
Confusion and inattention
Hormonal changes (LGI1 type)

Risk Factors

Cancer history (especially lung, testis, breast)
History of autoimmune disease
Smoking
Advanced age
Family history of autoimmune encephalitis
New-onset seizures
Unexplained psychiatric symptoms

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If new-onset memory loss and behavioral changes are present
  • If a first-time seizure occurs in an adult
  • New neurological symptoms in known cancer patients
  • If psychiatric symptoms progress rapidly and neurological findings are added
  • If neurological worsening occurs during follow-up of an autoimmune disease

Treatment Methods

01
Investigation and treatment of the underlying cancer
02
Corticosteroids
03
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG)
04
Plasmapheresis
05
