What is Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome?

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is a severe epileptic encephalopathy that usually starts between ages 3-5, characterized by multiple seizure types, distinctive EEG findings and cognitive impairment.

A significant portion of seizures cause tonic drops and are resistant to treatment; therefore injuries are common.

Underlying causes include structural brain damage, tuberous sclerosis, hypoxia, genetic disorders and transition from West syndrome.

Symptoms

Tonic seizures (especially during sleep)
Atonic seizures and sudden falls
Atypical absence seizures
Myoclonic jerks
Cognitive impairment and behavioral problems
Learning difficulties
Frequent injuries

Risk Factors

Perinatal brain injury
Tuberous sclerosis and other neurocutaneous syndromes
Genetic disorders
Previously experienced West syndrome
Cortical malformations
