What is Leech Therapy (Hirudotherapy): Complementary Use in Venous Insufficiency?

Hirudotherapy is the medical use of the Hirudo medicinalis leech. The leech secretion contains anticoagulant, vasodilatory, and anti-inflammatory molecules.

Evidence-based use exists in managing venous congestion in flaps and replanted extremities after reconstructive surgery.

In complementary medicine, it can be added in venous insufficiency, thrombophlebitis, and certain inflammatory conditions.
