What is Kinesio Taping?

A non-invasive adjunct using elastic cotton tape with acrylic adhesive, applied in specific patterns over skin.

Claimed mechanisms: sensorimotor feedback, fluid dynamics for edema, muscle facilitation or inhibition, pain modulation via cutaneous stimulation.

Applied with varying tensions (0–75%) depending on therapeutic goal.

Best used as adjunct to evidence-based exercise and manual therapy, not as primary treatment.

Symptoms

Musculoskeletal pain with edema or muscle dysfunction
Post-traumatic edema and lymphedema
Postural dysfunction with scapular or pelvic malalignment
Tendinopathy (patellar, rotator cuff)
Joint instability requiring proprioceptive feedback
Muscle inhibition or facilitation targets in rehabilitation

Risk Factors

Allergic reaction to acrylic adhesive or tape
Open wound, burn, or fragile skin
Active infection or dermatologic disease at application site
Deep vein thrombosis in treated region
Malignancy with skin or soft tissue involvement
Severe edema requiring medical workup

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Skin reaction: rash, blistering, or allergic response to tape
  • Increasing pain, swelling, or symptoms despite application
  • No improvement after 2–3 week trial combined with active rehabilitation

Treatment Methods

01
Skin preparation: clean and dry, shave if necessary, avoid moisturizers
02
Apply with appropriate tension: 0–25% for lymphatic, 25–50% for muscle, 50–75% for mechanical correction
03
Remove paper backing and rub to activate adhesive after application
04
Tape may remain in place 3–5 days; remove gently with skin in direction of hair growth
05
Combine with active exercise, manual therapy, and postural education
06
Evaluate outcome; discontinue if no functional benefit
