What is Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio taping is a treatment technique developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in the 1970s, using specialized cotton tapes whose elasticity (130-140% stretch) approximates that of skin.

Tapes applied to the skin stimulate cutaneous receptors, enhancing proprioception (body-position sense), create space under the skin to improve blood and lymphatic flow, and provide analgesia via the gate-control theory.

It is widely used for sports injuries, muscle tension, postural disorders, lymphedema, low-back/neck pain and pediatric rehabilitation.

Symptoms

Muscle tension and strain
Sports injuries (tendinopathy, ligament support)
Postural disorders
Lymphedema management
Patellofemoral pain syndrome

Risk Factors

Allergic reaction to the tape (contact dermatitis)
Application on sensitive or thin skin (irritation)
Application over active skin infections or open wounds
Contraindicated in DVT or active thrombus

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If a skin reaction develops at the taping site
  • If pain worsens with taping
  • When underlying serious pathology must be ruled out
  • When planning taping as part of chronic-pain treatment

Treatment Methods

Application by a trained physiotherapist or physician
02
Muscle inhibition or facilitation technique according to indication
03
Tape worn for 3-5 days
