What is Ketogenic Diet and Epilepsy?

Ketogenic diet is a medical nutritional therapy containing high fat, adequate protein, and very low carbohydrates, which directs the body to use ketone bodies as an energy source.

It has been shown in randomized trials to provide a 50% or greater reduction in seizure frequency in pediatric refractory epilepsy. Modified Atkins and low glycemic index diets are more flexible alternatives.

It requires a multidisciplinary team (pediatric neurology, dietitian, nurse). Complications include cardiovascular risk, kidney stones, constipation, and growth retardation.

Symptoms
