What is Vascular Angiography and Interventional Treatment?

Vascular angiography (digital subtraction angiography - DSA) is the gold standard vascular imaging method performed by placing a catheter via the femoral or radial artery and injecting contrast material into the target vessel.

In addition to diagnostic angiography, interventional treatments such as balloon angioplasty, stent placement, embolization, thrombectomy and thrombolysis can be performed in the same session.

It is widely used in peripheral arterial disease, renal artery stenosis, carotid stenosis, aortic aneurysm, AVM embolization and acute bleeding control.

Symptoms

Peripheral arterial disease (claudication, critical limb ischemia)
Renal artery stenosis (resistant hypertension)
Carotid artery stenosis
Aortic aneurysm (EVAR planning)
Acute GI or postoperative bleeding

Risk Factors

Iodinated contrast allergy
Renal failure (contrast nephropathy)
Bleeding disorders
Access site complications (hematoma, pseudoaneurysm)
Distal embolization risk

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When significant vascular stenosis is detected on non-invasive imaging
  • In critical limb ischemia or acute limb ischemia
  • For endovascular treatment planning
  • When embolization is needed in active bleeding

Treatment Methods

01
Catheterization via femoral or radial artery access
02
Imaging with digital subtraction angiography (DSA)
03
Balloon angioplasty and stent implantation
04
Embolization (coil, particle, glue)
05
Mechanical or pharmacological thrombectomy
06
Access site hemostasis (manual compression or closure device)
