Interventional radiology (IR) is a subspecialty of radiology that includes minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed under imaging guidance.

Procedures such as biopsy, drainage, angioplasty, embolization, port and catheter placement, radiofrequency ablation, and TIPS form the foundation of this field.

Drainage of an abscess or fluid collection
Opening of vessel occlusion
Embolization for bleeding control
Long-term central venous access
Tumor ablation

Risk Factors

Bleeding diathesis and anticoagulant use
Contrast medium allergy
Renal failure
Risk of infection
Vessel injury and embolization complications
Pregnancy
