What is Image-Guided Biopsy?

Image-guided biopsy is the percutaneous removal of tissue from a target lesion using a fine or core needle under ultrasound, CT, or MR guidance. It is an alternative to open surgery with a low complication rate.

It is frequently performed in lesions of the thyroid, breast, liver, lung, lymph nodes, and soft tissues. Pathological examination enables diagnosis and treatment planning.

The procedure is mostly performed under local anesthesia; sedation or general anesthesia is rarely needed.

Symptoms

Detection of a suspicious lesion on ultrasound or CT
Confirmation of a tumor diagnosis
Differential diagnosis of inflammatory disease
Sampling an infectious focus
Tissue-level evaluation of treatment response
Sampling for molecular markers

Risk Factors

Bleeding disorder and use of anticoagulants
Risk of infection
Difficult access at implants and certain locations
Inability to cooperate
Contrast allergy (with CT guidance)
Pregnancy
