What is Hypnosis: Clinical Use in Chronic Pain Management?

Clinical hypnosis is a psychophysiological approach characterized by an increased capacity to accept suggestion in a state of deep concentration and focused attention. Hypnotic analgesia, hypnotic dissociation, and self-hypnosis techniques are used in pain management.

Evidence-based indications include chronic low back pain, cancer pain, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, postoperative pain, labor pain, migraine, and phantom limb pain. Meta-analyses have shown moderate-to-large effect sizes for pain scores.

Mechanistically, it modulates the cortical pain matrix, decreases the affective component of nociceptive signals, and improves coping strategies. It should be delivered by certified clinicians (physicians, psychologists, nurses).
