What is Hydrotherapy in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation?

Hydrotherapy (aquatic therapy) is a traditional and modern treatment method that uses the physical properties of water (buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, thermal effect, viscosity) for the treatment and rehabilitation of disease.

Exercises performed in warm pools (33-36 degrees Celsius) reduce the body's effective weight by 50-90% and dramatically decrease joint loading. As a result, movements that are painful on land can be performed easily in water.

Evidence-based efficacy has been demonstrated in osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, chronic low back pain and neurological rehabilitation (stroke, Parkinson disease).

Symptoms

Knee and hip osteoarthritis
Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes
Ankylosing spondylitis
Motor rehabilitation after stroke
Early postoperative rehabilitation

Risk Factors

Uncontrolled cardiovascular disease
Open wound or active skin infection
Urinary or fecal incontinence
Severe epilepsy
Chlorine allergy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Physical therapy assessment for chronic pain and reduced mobility
  • Alternative rehabilitation in patients who cannot tolerate land exercises
  • Planning of early postoperative rehabilitation

Treatment Methods

01
Warm-pool (33-36 degrees Celsius) exercise program
02
Edema reduction through hydrostatic pressure
03
Resistive water exercises for muscle strengthening
04
