What is Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Therapy)?

Hydrotherapy (aquatic therapy) is a therapeutic exercise method in which the body is immersed in water to take advantage of the buoyancy, resistance, temperature and hydrostatic pressure of water. Water reduces joint loading by 60-90%, allowing exercise for patients who are in pain or unable to bear weight.

Warm water (33-36°C) relaxes muscle spasm, increases blood flow and reduces pain. Contrast bathing (alternating cold and warm) is used to relieve edema and inflammation.

Indications include osteoarthritis, neurological rehabilitation, chronic low back pain, fibromyalgia, early-phase orthopedic postoperative rehabilitation and postpartum pelvic floor strengthening.

Symptoms

Severe osteoarthritis or difficulty bearing weight on joints
Movement difficulty in stroke and neurological diseases
Chronic pain and fibromyalgia
Early postoperative rehabilitation
Orthopedic deformity and muscle weakness
Postoperative edema and stiffness

Risk Factors

Open wounds and skin infection (contraindication)
Uncontrolled cardiovascular disease
Urinary incontinence (requires special protocol)
Allergy to pool disinfectants
Inability to swim (shallow pool protocol)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If land-based exercise is not tolerated
  • For evaluation of early postoperative aquatic therapy
  • To plan a program for fibromyalgia or a neurological condition
  • To assess cardiovascular safety for hydrotherapy
  • To check whether wound healing is complete

Treatment Methods

01
In-pool walking and balance exercises
02
Hydrokinesitherapy (in-water mobility exercises)
03
Contrast bathing and hot/cold applications
04
Halliwick method (for neurological patients)
05
Whirlpool and Hubbard tank applications
06
Underwater running and aerobic water exercises
