What is Hot and Cold Applications (Thermotherapy)?

Thermotherapy is one of the classic physical therapy modalities that includes hot (hot pack, paraffin, infrared, whirlpool) and cold (ice pack, cold spray, cryotherapy) applications.

Hot application provides vasodilation, muscle relaxation, and pain reduction; it is preferred in chronic pain and muscle spasms. Cold application provides vasoconstriction, decreased metabolic rate, and edema control; it is preferred in acute injuries.

It is a general rule to apply cold for the first 48-72 hours after acute injuries and heat afterward. Caution is needed in areas with sensory loss, vascular insufficiency, and wounds.

Symptoms
