What is Homeopathy — General Overview and Evidence Level?

Homeopathy was developed by Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century and is based on the principle 'similia similibus curentur'.

Substances are diluted in serial steps (e.g., 30C dilution = practically no molecule); the basis of the theory is 'water memory'.

Cochrane and major scientific organisations (NHS, NHMRC) state that there is no evidence beyond placebo.

Symptoms

Conditions in which homeopathy is mostly used:
Chronic pain and headache
Allergic rhinitis and seasonal allergy
Anxiety, stress and insomnia
Recurrent upper respiratory tract infection
Eczema and atopic dermatitis
Functional gastrointestinal disturbance

Risk Factors

Direct toxic effect of homeopathic preparations is rare
However, dangerous if alone is preferred to evidence-based treatment
Severe disease (cancer, sepsis) may delay diagnosis
Vaccine refusal and homeopathy combination is risky
Some 'low potency' (D1, D2) products may contain real toxic doses
Drug interaction with allopathic drugs may be variable
Liver/kidney damage may develop with unregulated products

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Conventional medical treatment must be initiated for serious or rapidly progressing symptoms
  • Information must be given to the physician about homeopathic use in cancer treatment
  • Vaccination programmes must be continued for paediatric patients
  • Risk of substitution with insulin or antihypertensive in chronic disease management

Treatment Methods

01
Evidence-based medicine principles must be primary
02
Homeopathy may be considered with informed consent in supportive role
03
It must not be substituted for cancer or severe disease
04
Consultation with a physician with knowledge of integrative medicine
05
If used, sources from a registered homeopath must be obtained
06
Conventional treatment compliance is critical for chronic disease control
