What is Homeopathy in Chronic Atopic Dermatitis?

Homeopathy is a complementary therapeutic system based on the principle of similars (like cures like) and the use of highly diluted, succussed preparations of plant, mineral or animal origin individualised to the patient.

In chronic atopic dermatitis, homeopathic practitioners use individualised remedies such as Sulphur, Graphites, Calcarea carbonica, Arsenicum album or Petroleum, chosen on the basis of detailed history, skin morphology and constitutional features.

From a biomedical viewpoint, homeopathy is controversial because the typical dilutions exceed Avogadro number and a specific molecular mechanism is not demonstrated; the discipline is regulated as a complementary practice in many countries including Turkey under GETAT.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including Cochrane and other groups, have consistently found no robust evidence that homeopathy is more effective than placebo for atopic dermatitis or other conditions; observed benefits in clinical practice are largely attributed to non-specific consultation effects, patient education and lifestyle modification.

Standard care for atopic dermatitis remains regular emollients, topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors, allergen and irritant avoidance, and step-up therapy (phototherapy, systemic immunomodulators or biologics such as dupilumab) for severe disease; homeopathy may be offered in addition only after informed discussion and never as a replacement.

Symptoms

Chronic itchy, dry, eczematous skin in flexures or face
Recurrent flares triggered by allergens, stress or temperature
Sleep disruption from intense pruritus
Lichenification and post-inflammatory pigment changes
Frequent skin infections (Staphylococcus, herpes simplex)

Risk Factors

Personal or family history of atopy (asthma, allergic rhinitis)
Filaggrin gene mutations
Early-life environmental triggers
Repeated exposure to irritants (soaps, detergents, wool)
Coexisting food or aeroallergen sensitisation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Severe widespread eczema not controlled by emollients and standard topical therapy
  • Signs of skin infection (pustules, weeping, fever)
  • Severe sleep disturbance and impact on quality of life
  • Plans to use complementary therapies in children
  • Suspected adverse effect from any remedy or product

Treatment Methods

01
Daily emollient therapy and gentle skin care
02
Topical corticosteroids during flares with appropriate potency
03
Topical calcineurin inhibitors for sensitive areas
04
Treatment of secondary infections with antibiotics or antivirals
05
Step-up to phototherapy or systemic therapy (dupilumab, JAK inhibitors) in severe disease
06
Allergen and trigger avoidance and patient education
07
Adjunctive homeopathy only after counselling and only alongside standard care
08
Avoidance of unverified herbal or homeopathic creams that may contain undeclared steroids
