What is Heart Failure Rehabilitation?

Heart failure rehabilitation is applied in stable patients on optimal medical therapy. While exercise was previously seen as a contraindication, today it is accepted as evidence-based standard treatment.

The program includes assessment (cardiopulmonary exercise testing, 6-minute walk test), prescribed exercise, education, nutritional counseling and psychosocial support.

Combinations of aerobic, resistance and interval training are the most effective approach. NYHA class II-III patients benefit the most; class IV patients should be evaluated more carefully.
