What is Healing Mud (Peloid) Therapy?

Peloid is a mineral mud composed of natural inorganic and organic substances mixed with thermal water; it includes peat, sea silt and clay-based muds.

Heat retention capacity is high; transfers heat to the body slowly and homogeneously, providing local hyperaemia, vasodilatation and muscle relaxation.

It has been included in European medical guidelines for chronic rheumatic diseases (knee osteoarthritis, low back pain), psoriasis and dermatological diseases.

Symptoms

Knee, hip and hand osteoarthritis
Chronic low back pain and neck pain
Fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain
Psoriasis and chronic eczema (in some types)
Soft tissue rheumatism and tendinitis
Postoperative musculoskeletal rehabilitation

Risk Factors

Severe cardiovascular disease
Open wound, burn and active skin infection
Severe peripheral vascular disease
Pregnancy (whole body peloid not recommended)
Allergy to mud content
Acute febrile illness and active inflammation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Physiatrist evaluation before peloid treatment
  • Skin sensitivity test should be done first
  • Cardiac evaluation in those with cardiac disease
  • Patch test in those with allergy

Treatment Methods

Mud temperature 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, application duration 20 to 30 minutes
