What is Hand and Wrist Rehabilitation?

Hand and wrist rehabilitation is a treatment programme used to restore function after orthopaedic, neurological and rheumatologic conditions affecting the upper extremity.

Common indications include distal radius fracture, scaphoid fracture, flexor-extensor tendon repair, carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, post-stroke and post-rheumatoid arthritis.

The programme is performed by certified hand therapists (CHT, OTR, PT) and includes range of motion, strengthening, scar massage, splinting and ergonomic training.

Symptoms

Indications: distal radius fracture (post-cast)
Indications: flexor-extensor tendon repair
Indications: carpal tunnel surgery
Indications: De Quervain's tenosynovitis
Indications: post-stroke spastic hand
Indications: rheumatoid arthritis and joint deformity
Indications: post-amputation prosthetic training

Risk Factors

Acute fracture (without open reduction)
Active infection and septic arthritis
Severe joint instability and dislocation
Acute compartment syndrome
Severe complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
Uncontrolled bleeding diathesis
Patient compliance problem and cognitive impairment

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Acute pain, swelling and limitation of motion require evaluation by a hand surgeon or PMR specialist
  • Rehabilitation should be started within the first 1-2 weeks after surgery
  • Custom splints should be made and worn for 4-6 weeks
  • Long-term ergonomic training and home programme are essential
