What is Hand Rehabilitation?

Hand rehabilitation is a specialized subdiscipline aimed at restoring the motor, sensory and functional capacity of the hand after hand surgery or in conservative treatment. Hand therapists (physiotherapists or occupational therapists specialized in hand rehabilitation) work in this field.

Early controlled mobilization protocols after flexor or extensor tendon repair (e.g., Kleinert, Modified Duran), sensory re-education after nerve repair, comprehensive program after replantation and joint protection techniques are core components of hand rehabilitation.

In flexor tendon healing, zone II injuries (no man's land) constitute the most challenging group, and early controlled motion is essential to prevent adhesion formation.

Symptoms

Restricted hand and finger motion
Decreased grip and finger strength
Loss of sensation or sensory disturbance in the hand
Finger swelling and stiffness
Functional loss in the hand (inability to button, hold, etc.)
Adhesion at the wound site

Risk Factors

Hand fractures and surgery
Flexor/extensor tendon injuries
Peripheral nerve injury and repair
Rheumatoid arthritis and hand deformities
Burn injury
Diabetic hand complications

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • After tendon or nerve repair surgery
  • If motion is not regained after cast removal of a hand fracture
  • If finger stiffness or locking is present
  • If sensory loss in the hand persists
  • If fine motor impairment interferes with work or daily life

Treatment Methods

01
Early controlled mobilization protocols
02
Custom splinting (static and dynamic splints)
03
Edema control: compression and elevation
04
Sensory training and desensitization
05
Grip strengthening exercises
06
Occupational therapy targeting activities of daily living
