What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome Rehabilitation?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute symmetric paralysis due to autoimmune attack against peripheral nerves. The most common form is AIDP (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy). Symptoms peak in 2-4 weeks; slow recovery begins after the plateau phase.

Rehabilitation includes acute, subacute and reconstructive phases. In the acute phase, positioning, passive ROM, respiratory support and DVT prophylaxis; in subacute, active assisted exercise and submaximal strengthening (avoiding overfatigue); in the reconstructive phase, gait training, balance and ADL are focused on.

Excessive exercise can delay recovery (overwork weakness); therefore objective monitoring of muscle strength (MMT, dynamometer) is important. 80% of patients recover fully or near-fully in 1 year; 20% have residual weakness.

Symptoms

Acute ascending paralysis
Sensory loss
Areflexia
Weakness in respiratory muscles
Autonomic dysfunction
Pain

Risk Factors

Preceding viral infection
Campylobacter jejuni infection
Post-vaccination (rare)
Surgery
Stress
Genetic predisposition

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In acute symmetric weakness (emergency)
  • If respiratory difficulty develops
  • In loss of walking
  • When muscle weakness progresses
  • For rehabilitation planning

Treatment Methods
