What is Ginkgo Biloba and Dementia?

Ginkgo biloba extract (especially EGb 761) is a herbal preparation studied as a complementary therapy in dementia and cognitive symptoms because of its antioxidant and microcirculation-supporting effects.

Studies have produced mixed results. Some systematic reviews have reported mild cognitive support, but it does not replace standard dementia treatment.

Due to safety concerns such as bleeding risk, interactions with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and lowering of the seizure threshold, it should be used under medical supervision.

Symptoms

Mild cognitive impairment
Alzheimer's adjuvant supportive therapy
Vascular dementia support
Peripheral artery disease symptoms
Tinnitus (limited evidence)
General cognitive support
Stress-related fatigue (low evidence)

Risk Factors

Use of anticoagulants or antiplatelets
Upcoming surgery (bleeding risk)
History of epilepsy
Allergy
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Interaction with SSRIs, MAO inhibitors
Non-standardized products
