What is FITT Principle and Exercise Prescription?

The FITT principle comprises exercise prescription principles adopted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). It includes the components Frequency (weekly frequency), Intensity, Time (duration) and Type (type of exercise). There are different recommendations for healthy individuals and people with chronic disease.

Aerobic exercise recommendation for healthy adults: 5 days per week of moderate intensity (150 minutes weekly) or 3 days of high intensity (75 minutes weekly). Resistance exercise: 2-3 days per week, 8-12 repetitions for major muscle groups, 2-4 sets.

The FITT principle is adapted in chronic disease. Disease-specific guidelines exist for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, chronic lung disease, stroke and Parkinson disease.
