What is Fetal MR Imaging?

Fetal MR is an examination usually performed in the second and third trimester to better characterize fetal anomalies suspected on ultrasound. Images are obtained with rapid sequences in the moving fetus.

The most common indications are conditions such as ventriculomegaly, corpus callosum anomalies, posterior fossa malformations, spina bifida, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and placenta accreta.

The general consensus is that fetal MR performed without contrast material on 1.5 Tesla devices is safe. Still, it is not preferred in the first trimester of pregnancy unless mandatory.

Symptoms

Suspicious anomaly on ultrasonography
CNS malformation
Pulmonary and cardiac malformation
Placenta accreta spectrum
Bowel and urogenital anomalies
Fetal tumors

Risk Factors

First trimester (avoided unless special)
Maternal claustrophobia
Metallic implant (MR contraindication)
Fetal motion artifact
Obesity
Need for functional anesthesia
