What is FEES and Videofluoroscopy (Swallowing Studies)?

Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) involves visualization of the pharynx and larynx through a thin endoscope inserted into the nose to monitor events during swallowing. It is radiation-free, can be performed at the bedside and uses dyed foods.

Videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is a dynamic study with fluoroscopic imaging in lateral and AP positions during swallowing of barium-containing foods. It is the method that shows all phases of swallowing in greatest detail but uses radiation.

The two methods complement each other. FEES is suitable for bedside use and repeat examinations, while VFSS better demonstrates the esophageal and oral phases. Aspiration severity is graded using the PAS (Penetration-Aspiration Scale).
