What is Exercise Therapy (Therapeutic Exercise)?

Therapeutic exercise is a structured, individualized exercise prescription aimed at recovering biomechanical function impaired after disease or injury. It includes the development of strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and aerobic capacity.

Evidence-based indications for exercise therapy include low back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular rehabilitation, obesity, diabetes, COPD and oncology rehabilitation.

An exercise prescription consists of frequency, intensity, time and type (FITT principle) and is progressed gradually according to the patient's condition.

Loss of range of motion

Reduced aerobic capacity
Chronic pain and functional limitation
Need for postoperative rehabilitation

Inactivity and sedentary lifestyle
