What is Electrotherapy Modalities?

Electrotherapy is a general term for physical therapy modalities that aim to achieve a therapeutic effect by applying electromagnetic or mechanical energy to biological tissues. The main methods include TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), interferential current, NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation), diathermy, ultrasound and shock wave therapy (ESWT).

TENS provides non-pharmacological pain relief in acute and chronic pain on the basis of the gate-control theory of pain and endorphin release. NMES is used to prevent atrophy and to strengthen muscles by stimulating muscle contraction.

ESWT stands out with high success rates in chronic musculoskeletal problems such as tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis.

Symptoms

Acute or chronic pain (back, neck, knee, shoulder, etc.)
Muscle atrophy and weakness
Tendinopathy and bursitis
Delayed wound healing
Edema and inflammation
Muscle spasm and stiffness

Risk Factors

Lack of response to analgesic drugs
Caution in patients with pacemakers (electrotherapy contraindication)
Some methods are contraindicated during pregnancy
Careful application over areas with skin damage
Contraindication in areas of acute thrombophlebitis

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • To plan a physical therapy program
  • When you wish to reduce or complement medication therapy
  • If chronic pain requires a multidisciplinary approach
  • To assess indications for a specific modality
  • When you want to check for contraindications

Treatment Methods

01
TENS: control of acute and chronic pain
02
Interferential current: deep tissue pain and edema
03
NMES: prevention of muscle atrophy and strengthening
04
Ultrasound therapy: deep tissue heating and healing
05
ESWT: tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, calcific shoulder
06
Laser therapy: superficial tissue healing and pain
