What is Dysarthria Rehabilitation?

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder that develops when neurological injury impairs the muscle control needed for speech. It can affect voice production, respiration, articulation, resonance and prosody. It is frequently seen in conditions such as Parkinson disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis and stroke.

According to the Mayo Clinic classification, dysarthria types are: flaccid (lower motor neuron), spastic (bilateral upper motor neuron), ataxic (cerebellar), hypokinetic (basal ganglia — Parkinson), hyperkinetic (basal ganglia — Huntington), unilateral upper motor neuron and mixed.

Rehabilitation approaches are determined by the type and severity of the disease and individual needs. LSVT LOUD (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) is the gold standard in Parkinson dysarthria.

Symptoms

Decreased voice loudness (hypophonia)
Impaired word articulation
Monotone and rapid speech (Parkinson)
Nasal speech (in flaccid type)
Explosive speech (in cerebellar type)
Communication failure

Risk Factors

Stroke
Parkinson disease
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Multiple sclerosis
Cerebellar diseases
Cerebral palsy
