What is Diffusion-Weighted MRI (DWI)?

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a special MRI technique that evaluates Brownian motion of water molecules in tissues. It is interpreted together with the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map.

In acute ischemic stroke, hyperintensity may be seen within 30 minutes of symptom onset; this feature makes it the gold standard in stroke diagnosis.

It is also widely used in tumor differential diagnosis, assessment of abscesses and cystic lesions, lymph node characterization, and prostate cancer diagnosis.

Symptoms

Acute ischemic stroke evaluation
Characterization of brain tumors
Differentiation of abscess from tumor
Multiparametric MRI for prostate cancer
Breast and liver lesions
Assessment of lymph node involvement

Risk Factors

MRI-incompatible metallic implants
Claustrophobia
Excessive motion (artifact)
Obesity and equipment incompatibility
Inability to cooperate
Previous surgery and implant artifacts

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • DWI is usually part of the routine cranial MRI protocol
  • Timely performance is critical when stroke is suspected
  • Contrast is generally also required
  • Results are interpreted in conjunction with the clinical picture

Treatment Methods

01
Standard MRI preparation
02
DWI and ADC map sequences
03
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) when required
04
Joint interpretation of the sequences
05
Sharing the result with the clinician
06
Integration with advanced examinations (perfusion MRI, etc.)
