What is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common and earliest long-term complications of diabetes. Chronic hyperglycemia impairs nerve conduction by damaging the microcirculation of peripheral nerves.

The most common form is distal symmetric polyneuropathy; numbness, burning, and loss of sensation starting from the soles of the feet and toes are typical. Autonomic neuropathy, on the other hand, can affect involuntary processes such as heart rate, digestion, and sexual function.

Loss of sensation predisposes to unnoticed small injuries on the foot and diabetic foot ulcers. Regular foot examination and strict blood sugar control are the main steps in preventing diabetic neuropathy.

Symptoms

Burning, tingling, and numbness on the soles of the feet
Pain that worsens at night
Hypersensitivity to touch
Loss of sensation and inability to notice injuries

Digestive difficulties, sweating disorder (autonomic involvement)

Risk Factors

High blood pressure and high triglycerides
Smoking
Concurrent kidney disease
Long duration of diabetes
