What is Denture Care?

Denture care encompasses the daily and periodic maintenance practices that preserve the integrity, fit and hygiene of removable dental prostheses, including complete dentures, partial dentures and implant-retained overdentures. Adequate denture care prevents biofilm accumulation that can lead to denture stomatitis, oral candidiasis, halitosis and accelerated alveolar bone resorption.

Proper care includes mechanical brushing with soft denture brushes, chemical immersion cleansers (alkaline peroxide or hypochlorite), overnight storage in water or specific solutions and regular professional inspection. Patients with implant-supported overdentures additionally require attention to peri-implant tissues and abutment hygiene to prevent peri-implantitis.

Symptoms

Loose-fitting denture
Sore spots or ulcerations under denture
Difficulty chewing or speaking
Bad breath despite cleaning
Red, inflamed mucosa under denture (stomatitis)
White patches indicating oral candidiasis
Stained or calcified denture
Cracked or broken denture base

Risk Factors

Inadequate daily cleaning
Overnight wear
Smoking and tobacco use
Diabetes and immunosuppression
Hyposalivation and dry mouth
Antibiotic or corticosteroid use
Older age with reduced manual dexterity
Continuous wear of ill-fitting dentures

When to See a Doctor?

Overnight immersion in alkaline peroxide or hypochlorite solutions
04
Routine ultrasonic cleaning at dental visits
05
Removal of denture overnight to allow mucosal recovery
06
Antifungal therapy (nystatin, fluconazole) for candidiasis

Annual or biannual dental check-up with denture inspection
09
