What is Dentin Hypersensitivity?

Dentin hypersensitivity (dentin hypersensitivity) is a sharp, short-duration pain felt in response to stimuli such as hot, cold, sweet, or touch when dentin tubules are exposed to the oral environment due to loss of enamel or cementum.

The hydrodynamic theory explains the stimulation of odontoblast processes and nerve fibers by fluid movement in dentin tubules. Enamel erosion, gingival recession, bruxism, and abrasive toothpastes are the main causes.

Treatment includes desensitizing agents (potassium nitrate, strontium chloride), fluoride varnishes, and restorative treatments in advanced cases.

Symptoms

Sharp pain in response to cold food and drinks
Sensitivity to hot stimuli
Pain increasing with sweet foods
Discomfort during brushing
Tingling on contact with air (breathing)

Risk Factors

Aggressive brushing
Acidic diet (citrus fruits, carbonated drinks)
Bruxism and attrition
Gum recession
After whitening treatment
After tartar cleaning (temporary)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If sensitivity affects daily life
  • If there is prolonged spontaneous pain (pulpitis exclusion)
  • If it does not improve despite desensitizing pastes
  • Localized sensitivity in a specific tooth

Treatment Methods

01
Desensitizing toothpastes (potassium nitrate)
02
Professional fluoride varnish application
03
Resin or glass ionomer barrier application
04
Laser desensitization
05
Gingival graft (if recession-related)
06
Correct brushing technique education

Teeth Whitening

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Teeth whitening lightens tooth color using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels. In-office (professional) bleaching uses higher concentrations with light activation for faster results; home bleaching uses custom trays with lower concentrations over 1–4 weeks. Safety depends on healthy teeth, correct concentration, isolation of gums and transient sensitivity management.

Gingival Recession (Gum Recession)

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Gingival recession is the apical displacement of the gingival margin with exposure of the root surface. It may be localized or generalized and results from mechanical trauma, periodontal disease, thin biotype or anatomic factors. Recession can cause root sensitivity, caries and aesthetic concerns; management includes cause elimination and surgical root coverage when indicated.
