What is Dental Fracture and Trauma?

Dental trauma covers a wide spectrum including enamel fracture, enamel-dentin fracture, root fracture, luxation (dislocation), and avulsion (complete loss). The depth of the fracture and pulp involvement determine the treatment plan.

An avulsed permanent tooth should be brought to the clinic as soon as possible (preferably within 30 minutes) by being kept in cold milk, saline, or the owner's mouth. The success rate of reimplantation decreases rapidly over time.

In children, primary tooth traumas should be carefully evaluated due to the risk of affecting the underlying permanent tooth bud.

Symptoms

Visible tooth fracture or piece breaking off
Severe pain and sensitivity
Tooth appearing dislocated or extruded
Change in bite position
Swelling in the face or mouth
Bleeding gums

Risk Factors

Protruding upper front teeth (protrusion)
Contact sports (football, basketball)
Not using a mouthguard
Epilepsy
Bicycle and skateboard accidents
Falls in children

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Immediately if the tooth is completely avulsed (avulsion is an emergency)
  • Within 24 hours if there is a visible fracture in the tooth
  • If pain and sensitivity are severe
  • If there is swelling and bruising on the face or jaw
  • If opening the mouth has become difficult

Treatment Methods

01
Composite bonding or veneer for enamel fracture
02
Root canal treatment for pulp involvement
03
Reimplantation and splint in avulsion
04
Reduction and splint in luxation
05
Regular X-ray follow-up during the healing process
