What is Dental Scaling and Professional Cleaning?

Dental scaling (prophylaxis) is a preventive professional procedure to remove dental plaque, calculus (tartar), and extrinsic stains from tooth surfaces above and below the gumline.

Procedure uses ultrasonic scalers (piezoelectric or magnetostrictive) producing high-frequency vibrations to fragment calculus, combined with manual hand instruments (curettes, scalers) for refined deplaquing and root surface debridement. Polishing with rubber cups and abrasive paste smooths tooth surfaces and removes residual stains.

Recommended frequency depends on individual oral hygiene and risk factors: every 6 months for healthy patients, every 3-4 months for periodontal maintenance, and as needed for high-risk individuals (smokers, diabetics, orthodontic appliance wearers). Combined with consistent home oral hygiene, scaling prevents gingivitis, periodontal disease, and tooth loss.

Symptoms

Visible dental calculus (tartar) on teeth
Gingival inflammation, redness, or swelling
Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
Persistent halitosis (bad breath)
Tooth surface staining (coffee, tea, tobacco, wine)
Receding gums and tooth sensitivity
Dental plaque accumulation despite home brushing

Risk Factors

Inadequate home oral hygiene (brushing, flossing)
Smoking and tobacco use
Diabetes and other systemic diseases
Crowded or malaligned teeth (plaque retention)
Orthodontic brackets, retainers, dentures, implants
Pregnancy (hormonal gingival changes)
Xerostomia (dry mouth) from medications or radiation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Routine 6-month dental cleaning if good oral hygiene
  • More frequent (3-4 month) cleaning if periodontal disease history
  • Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
  • Visible tartar on teeth
  • Gum recession or sensitivity
  • Bad breath despite good home hygiene
  • Pre-treatment for orthodontic, prosthetic, or implant work

Treatment Methods

01
Comprehensive oral examination and periodontal probing
02
Supragingival scaling with ultrasonic scaler
03
Subgingival scaling and root planing in periodontal patients
04
Polishing with rubber cup and prophylactic paste
05
Topical fluoride application for caries prevention
06
Oral hygiene instructions (brushing technique, flossing, mouth rinses)
07
Schedule next maintenance visit based on individual risk assessment
