What is Dental Laser Applications?

Dental lasers are highly focused light sources of specific wavelengths used in dental practice for hard- and soft-tissue procedures. The four major dental laser types differ by absorption characteristics: erbium lasers (Er:YAG 2940 nm, Er,Cr:YSGG 2780 nm) ablate enamel, dentin and bone via water absorption; CO2 (10,600 nm) and diode (810-980 nm) lasers cut soft tissue with hemostatic effect; Nd:YAG (1064 nm) penetrates deeper for periodontal pocket decontamination.

Clinical applications include minimally invasive caries removal and cavity preparation (Er:YAG), gingivectomy and aesthetic crown lengthening (CO2 or diode), frenectomy in pediatric patients, periodontal pocket disinfection (LANAP — Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure with Nd:YAG), root canal disinfection in endodontics, soft-tissue biopsy, denture-related lesion management, herpes treatment, and tooth bleaching activation.

Advantages include reduced bleeding from coagulation effect, less postoperative pain and edema, decreased need for local anesthesia in children, antimicrobial effect, and improved patient acceptance compared with traditional bur-and-blade techniques. Limitations include high equipment cost, learning curve, contraindications in certain pacemakers (Nd:YAG), and lack of tactile feedback. Strict eye protection and safety protocols are mandatory; all personnel must wear wavelength-specific protective eyewear.

Symptoms

Pediatric anxiety with traditional drilling
Need for hemostatic soft-tissue procedure
Minimally invasive caries treatment
Aesthetic gingival contouring
Refractory periodontal pocket
Frenectomy or operculectomy
Endodontic disinfection requirement

Risk Factors

Patient with bleeding disorder
Pediatric patient with dental anxiety
Esthetic zone soft tissue management
Periodontal disease with refractory pockets
Need for minimally invasive procedure
Patient unable to tolerate local anesthetic
Soft-tissue lesion biopsy needed

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Aesthetic concern requiring tissue contouring
  • Pediatric dental work needing minimally invasive option
  • Refractory periodontitis
  • Soft-tissue lesion management
  • Frenectomy or other minor surgery
  • Discussion of laser-assisted vs conventional treatment

Impacted Tooth

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

An impacted tooth — most often a wisdom tooth — has not erupted fully and remains in the jaw bone or gum. It can lead to pericoronitis, caries and cysts.

Dental Implants

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed in the jawbone that supports a crown, bridge or denture, providing the closest possible function and aesthetics to a natural tooth.

Teeth Whitening

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Teeth whitening lightens tooth color using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels. In-office (professional) bleaching uses higher concentrations with light activation for faster results; home bleaching uses custom trays with lower concentrations over 1–4 weeks. Safety depends on healthy teeth, correct concentration, isolation of gums and transient sensitivity management.

Orthodontics

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that corrects the alignment of the teeth and jaws, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits at any age, from childhood through adulthood.

Gingival Recession (Gum Recession)

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Gingival recession is the apical displacement of the gingival margin with exposure of the root surface. It may be localized or generalized and results from mechanical trauma, periodontal disease, thin biotype or anatomic factors. Recession can cause root sensitivity, caries and aesthetic concerns; management includes cause elimination and surgical root coverage when indicated.
