What is Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implant surgery is the placement of biocompatible titanium or zirconium screws into the alveolar bone to replace missing tooth roots, providing support for crowns, bridges or full-arch prostheses. Osseointegration, the direct structural and functional connection between bone and implant surface, is achieved over 3-6 months.

Modern protocols include immediate, early or delayed loading; guided implant surgery with CBCT-based virtual planning; bone augmentation procedures (sinus lift, GBR, block grafts); and digital workflow integration. Reported 10-year survival rates exceed 95% in well-selected patients.

Symptoms

Single or multiple missing teeth
Failure of removable dentures or bridges
Esthetic concerns from missing front teeth
Difficulty chewing or speaking
Bone resorption from long-standing edentulism
Adjacent tooth preservation in fixed prosthetic planning

Risk Factors

Heavy smoking (>10 cigarettes/day)
Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus
Bisphosphonate or anti-resorptive therapy
History of head and neck radiation
Severe periodontitis or poor oral hygiene
Bruxism without nightguard protection
Insufficient bone volume requiring augmentation
