What is CT Urography?

CT urography is a multiphase contrast-enhanced CT examination that evaluates the renal parenchyma, collecting system, ureters, and bladder. It consists of unenhanced, nephrographic, and excretory phases.

The most common indication is the evaluation of macroscopic hematuria in adults. It is also used in urinary stones, tumors, congenital anomalies, trauma, and iatrogenic complications.

Hydration and use of diuretics optimize opacification of the collecting system. Because the radiation dose may be high, the protocol is tailored individually.

Symptoms

Macroscopic hematuria
Urinary tract stone
Ureter and bladder tumor
Congenital anomalies
Surgical planning
Traumatic urinary tract injury

Risk Factors

Pregnancy
Iodinated contrast allergy
Advanced renal failure
Dehydration
Multiple myeloma (careful hydration)
Repeat contrast administration

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Indication is determined by a urologist
  • Renal function should be checked and hydration ensured
  • Temporary discontinuation of metformin in diabetic patients should be considered
  • Negative results should be confirmed with further urology evaluation

Treatment Methods

01
Hydration and diuretic premedication
02
Multiphase contrast-enhanced CT acquisition
03
Coronal and sagittal reconstructions
04
Delayed excretory phase images
05
Joint evaluation with urology when pathology is detected
06
Cystoscopy and urological intervention if necessary
