What is CT Angiography (CTA)?

CT angiography (CTA) is high-resolution vascular imaging obtained with multidetector CT after intravenous injection of iodinated contrast.

It is widely used to evaluate the coronary, pulmonary, aortic, cerebral, renal, and peripheral vessels. It is the first choice in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, and coronary artery disease.

It is less invasive and quicker than conventional angiography. However, radiation exposure and contrast risks must be considered.

Symptoms

Suspicion of pulmonary embolism
Aortic dissection and aneurysm
Screening for coronary artery disease
Cerebral vessel evaluation (stroke)
Renal artery stenosis
Peripheral artery disease

Risk Factors

Contrast allergy
Renal failure
Hyperthyroidism
Pregnancy (requires strong indication)
Repeated radiation exposure
Multiple myeloma

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • A history of contrast allergy must be reported
  • Renal function (creatinine, eGFR) should be evaluated
  • Metformin may be discontinued on the day of the procedure
  • Fasting for 4-6 hours before the procedure may be recommended

Treatment Methods

01
Preparation of intravenous access and contrast injector
02
Breath-hold instructions
03
Synchronized contrast injection and image acquisition
04
3D reconstruction and multiplanar imaging
05
Reporting by a radiologist
06
Joint evaluation with the clinician
