What is Cranial MRI?

Cranial MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to image brain tissue and intracranial structures slice by slice. It contains no radiation and has soft tissue resolution superior to CT.

It is the principal imaging tool in the investigation of brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, stroke, infections, vascular malformations, and dementia. Procedure time is 20-45 minutes.

Pacemakers, cochlear implants, metal clips, and some old stents may be contraindications. Gadolinium-based contrast is given when needed.

Symptoms

Persistent or sudden-onset headache
Follow-up after stroke and transient ischemic attack
Suspected multiple sclerosis
Diagnosis and follow-up of epilepsy
Cognitive decline and dementia
Headache with papilledema
Chronic complaints after trauma

Risk Factors

Metal implants (pacemaker, cochlear implant)
Claustrophobia
Pregnancy (early period)
Gadolinium allergy
Severe renal failure
Need for sedation in children

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • MR/CT is requested with emergency department evaluation in sudden severe headache
  • Always report metal implants and pacemakers
  • MR indication should be evaluated by physician in pregnancy
  • Open MR or anxiolytic support is planned in claustrophobia

Treatment Methods

01
Removal of metal accessories and safety questioning
02
Remaining motionless during the procedure
03
Gadolinium contrast application when needed
