What is Coronary CT Calcium Scoring?

Coronary CT calcium scoring is the quantitative measurement of calcific plaques in coronary arteries with non-contrast CT and expression as a score (Agatston score).

It contributes to cardiovascular risk classification in asymptomatic, intermediate-risk patients. A zero score indicates low risk, high scores (>400) indicate increased event risk.

It is not sufficient alone in symptomatic patients and further investigation may be needed. Radiation dose is low and contrast material is not used.

Symptoms

Risk classification in intermediate-risk asymptomatic individuals
Clarification of cholesterol treatment decision
Family history of early coronary artery disease
Diabetes and metabolic syndrome
Borderline statin indication
First-degree relative anamnesis

Risk Factors

Radiation exposure (low level)
Pregnancy
Excessively high heart rate
Arrhythmia (affects image quality)
Obesity
May be misleading in symptomatic patients

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • May be useful in asymptomatic individuals with risk factors
  • If complaints exist, coronary CT angiography is more appropriate
  • Results are used in lifestyle and medication decisions
  • Not recommended in pregnancy

Treatment Methods

01
Short EKG-synchronized acquisition
02
Calculation of Agatston score
03
Risk classification (low, medium, high)
04
Result sharing with cardiologist
05
Further investigation planning if necessary
06
Patient lifestyle and medication recommendations
