What is Coronary Angiography?

Coronary angiography is the procedure in which a thin catheter is advanced from the wrist or groin artery to the coronary arteries, and radiopaque contrast is injected to visualize vessel anatomy under fluoroscopy.

It offers both diagnosis and treatment; detected stenoses can be opened in the same session with balloon and stent. Widely used worldwide, it is a cornerstone of modern cardiology.

Risks include bleeding, allergy, kidney impairment, and very rarely vessel injury. It is safe in experienced centers.

Symptoms

Suspected acute coronary syndrome
Unstable angina
High-risk stress test results
Pre-evaluation before open-heart surgery
Heart failure work-up
Anatomic assessment and treatment planning

Risk Factors

Renal insufficiency
Contrast allergy
Bleeding disorders and anticoagulant use
Peripheral arterial disease
Dehydration
Pregnancy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Emergency angiography is considered for typical ischemic chest pain with ECG changes
  • Elective angiography is appropriate when high-risk stress test findings are present
  • It may be performed during follow-up to assess treatment response in coronary disease
  • History of kidney disease and allergies should be reported to the physician

Treatment Methods

01
Pre-procedure hydration and laboratory evaluation
02
Radial or femoral access
03
Careful contrast use
04
Stent and balloon angioplasty if stenosis is detected
05
Post-procedure observation and bleeding follow-up
06
Long-term antiplatelet and medical therapy
